Why Raw?
After much research, study and debate we have come to the conclusion that less tends to be more and often times better. We feed our dogs a raw diet modeled after what wolves eat in the wild. We do this because though our domestic dogs looking nothing like their wild ancestors they still have the same genetic make up of a wolf. Because of this our dogs have healthy gums and teeth, clean smelling breath, less dandruff and no ear issues to speak of. Kibble is highly processed, highly refined and full of all kinds of waste that a dog wouldn’t choose to eat if given the choice.
How to start?
We recommend finding a good pre made raw food to get started. Raw dog express has been a wonderful company serving NE. This way, your not overwhelmed with new puppy, new food and new systems. Pre made raw food comes in an easy tube that you then thaw and weigh portions out to feed your puppy. In fact, when I first started feeding raw I got a freeze dried raw food that was very similar to kibble only I had to reconstitute it before feeding. Then as I got comfortable with feeding raw I just jumped in making my own (it’s not hard just takes a bit of learning)
StellaandChewys Darwinspet and rawfeedingmiami are just a couple more well known raw food companies that will ship right to your door. I’ve found with a little foot work though, often times there are cheaper options more local depending on where you live. Joining a raw dog food co-op is another option.
Rawdogexpress makes grinds and also sells bulk meaty bones, organ meats among other tasty tidbits for dogs. We buy most of our dog food through them now and love there service and products!
How much to feed your puppy?
Feed 2-3% Of His Adult Body Weight
Knowing how much to feed is often where people get caught up. But it’s actually pretty easy to figure out.
This is easier to determine if you have a purebred dog, but the amount you feed should be 2-3% of your puppy’s adult weight. If you’re not sure what that will be, feed about 10% of his current weight. Watch to see if he gets too fat or too thin and adjust accordingly.
Supplemental and good books
1. Beef marrow bones are important to provide for cleaning teeth but also for helping your puppy to focus on teething on the bones and not your shoes!
2. Nuvet www.Nuvet.com/18202 has done wonders with our dogs coats and has given me peace of mind that we are filling in potential gaps.
3. Molly’s herbal wormer this is what we use for our own dogs and have for over a year now. We feel that it has worked well and does the job needed.
